With the hosts Spain represented alongside the four continental teams and the national teams from the USA, Germany, Great Britain (men only) and Russia (women only), competitors at the 9th IAAF World Cup in Athletics in Madrid, 20 – 21 September, will be rewarded with a share of a prize money pool which totals over $3,000,000. The Spanish Federation will bear the cost of any prize money won by Spanish athletes.
At last weekend’s IAAF Grand Prix Final in Paris a total of $2,456,000 was available with Athletics’ Celebrity Couple Marion Jones ($150,000) and Tim Montgomery ($250,000) leaving town with the tidy sum of $400,000, as recompense for a total of 20.66 seconds (9.78 + 10.88) expended on the track of the Stade Charlety.
In Madrid, an individual World Cup winner will receive $30,000 with awards graduating down to $1000 for ninth place. In team relay events, the prize for victors is again $30,000 descending down in this case to $2000 for the ninth best team.
The 9th IAAF World Cup is Athletics biggest pay-day this year, and as merits such an occasion there will be a global television audience on hand to applaud the teams’ competitive exploits in the 28,000 seated Comunidad de Madrid Stadium, which was built to support the Madrid Olympic Candidature and has already held the 1996 European Cup Final.
In Europe, Eurosport will offer a pan European broadcast and in over 26 European countries viewers will have the opportunity to see the competition on terrestrial networks, including those in Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden, Finland etc….
All of Africa will view the action live via CFI and ART, and others to broadcast coverage will be China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Canada, Australia, Vietnam and Caribbean nations.
