Despite a spirited second day, Shelia Burrell had to settle for third place in Talence, as Roman Sebrle also failed to pull back Pappas and was second in the men's competition.

Going into today's competition, Burrell was in fourth position, 135 points behind the competition leader, Austra Skujyte (LTU) and trailing Larissa Netseporuk from Estonia and Kelly Sotherton of Great Britain. At the end of today's competition Sotherton had fallen by the wayside, leaving Burrell to do battle with Skujyte and Netseporuk.

Finally, it was Netseporuk who prevailed, finishing the second day of competition with 6151 points ahead of Skujyte with 6140 and Burrell with 6085.

In the men's competition, Tom Pappas was able to pull out the stops in the 110 metre hurdles (14.08 - 964 points) and produce creditable performances in the pole vault and javelin (5.05 metres and 62.76 metres respectively) to hold off Roman Sebrle's attack.

Pappas ended the competition with 8525 points, 108 points ahead of Sebrle. Behind the two, Russia's Lev Lobodin came in third with a total of 8356 points and Jon Arnar Magnusson (ISL) fourth with 8128 points.

Sebrle retains his strong hold on the overall standing of the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge, whilst Shelia Burrell moves into second place in the women's competition as she now totals 18747 points from three competitions, just behind Sabine Braun, who leads with 18987 points.
