4 March 1999 – speaking in his press conference in Maebashi earlier today, IAAF President Primo Nebiolo confirmed that the "Meeting de Paris", up until now an IAAF Grand Prix I meeting, will join the select ranks of the IAAF Golden League.

The Golden League was introduced by the IAAF in 1998 and offers the athlete(s) who win their Golden League events in all of the seven meetings of this elite circuit and in the Golden League Final, the possibility of sharing (or winning outright) the Golden League’s million dollar jackpot.

In 1998, the jackpot was shared by three athletes: Marion Jones (USA – 100m), Haile Gebrselassie (ETH – 3000/5000m), Hicham El Guerrouj (MAR – 1500m).

The 1999 Golden League will include the following meetings: June 30 Mobil Bislett Games (Oslo), July 7 Golden Gala (Rome), July 21 Meeting de Paris (Paris), August 04 Herculis Zepter (Monte Carlo), August 11 Weltklasse Zürich (Zürich), September 01 Memorial Van Damme (Brussels), September 08 ISTAF'99 (Berlin). The Golden League Final will be held in Munich (GER) on September 11.
