Middle distance legend Hicham El Guerrouj has attracted formidable fields for Sunday’s third edition of the Meeting International Moulay El Hassan in Tangiers.

El Guerrouj, the meeting director, announced world class fields across the board, including a strong slate of World and Olympic medalists. Among them are American Christian Cantwell, the World champion indoor and outdoors in the Shot Put and the hottest putter in the world at the moment.

The slate also includes a name familiar to El Guerrouj, American Bernard Lagat, the 2007 double World champion, who’ll run the 1500m. He’ll take on Moroccan Abdelati Iguider, the 2010 World indoor 1500m silver medallist.

Local stars will headline the 800m races, with Amine Laalou leading the men’s field and Hasna Benhasi the women’s where she’ll take on Halima Hachlaf, the winner in Rome in 1:58.40. The same holds true in the women’s 1500m where the field will be lead by this year’s breakout performer, Ibtissam Lakhouad, the close runner-up in Lausanne where she clocked a 3:59.35 national record.

There will be speed on hand as well. Carmelita Jeter, the current 100m leader in the Samsung Diamond League, will take on Jamaican Sherone Simpson, the Olympic 100m silver medallist.

Elsewhere on the infield, former World record holder Svetlana Feofanova will lead the field in the women’s Pole Vault and Eunice Barber of France leads the women’s Long Jump.

In all, the programme includes 16 events, eight each for the men and women, plus an additional four national events – men’s 800m, 1500m, 3000m and women’s 800m.
