Former Olympic marathon champion Carlos Lopes has been honoured by the Portuguese parliament.

The parliament approved unanimously a motion honouring Lopes who won the gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 as the 20th anniversary of his achievement looms.

Lopes was present in the public gallery as the citation was read in honour of his achievements.

"The effort, the commitment and the dignity which characterise the career and personality of the Olympic athlete Carlos Lopes provides the best example which can and should be transmitted to all those who will represent our country in the next Olympics in Athens,'' said the citation.

Lopes also set a world record for the marathon in Rotterdam in 1985, becoming the first man to run under two hours and eight minutes.

His victory in Los Angeles was all the more remarkable as he had been involved in a car crash just a fortnight before the race.
