MonteCarloThe Gulf state of Qatar will be the venue for a number of important IAAF meetings over the next few days, starting with the Development Commission and the Competition Commission on Thursday, continuing with the Marketing Commission on Friday and concluding with a meeting of the IAAF Council in the capital Doha this coming weekend.

As well as the customary reports from the IAAF President, General Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, the first session of Council will review reports from 10 IAAF Committees and Commissions – before carefully studying Rule Change proposals for the 45th edition of the IAAF Congress which takes place in Helsinki on 3-4 August, just before the 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

At least 207 proposals for technical rule changes, plus 14 for the IAAF Constitution, will be presented to the Congress, the IAAF’s highest decision making body, with the Council also having the right to propose more changes depending on the discussions in Doha.

Amongst the subjects likely to provoke the most serious discussions are the Transfer of Allegiance of athletes from one Member Federation to another, the False Start rule, and the future of Award Ceremonies, which demand a lot of time during competitions.

Although discussion of all these rule change proposals will be their main priority, Council will also consider the current status of the IAAF Athletics’ World Plan, and decide the venue for the 2007 edition of the World Youth Championships.

To conclude the Council Meeting, progress reports will be delivered by representatives of the four remaining WAS competitions of 2005 – the World Youth Championships (Marrakech), the World Championships in Athletics (Helsinki), the World Athletics Final (Monaco) and the World Half Marathon Championships (Edmonton).

Full details of the major decisions taken by Council this weekend will be published on the IAAF website.
