Record number of candidates for 2011 World Championships

Letters of intent from 9 countries in 5 continents

Seoul, Korea - With the deadline for receipt of letters of intent now passed, the IAAF can announce that a record number of countries have declared an interest to host the 2011 edition of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
 
A total of 9 countries from 5 continental areas (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania) will now be subject to a rigorous evaluation process, with the winner being selected by the IAAF Council in the Spring of 2007.

"I am delighted to see such strong interest, from so many different parts of the world, as this demonstrates not only the strength of our Athletics movement, but the particular value of our top competition," said IAAF President Diack. "Having 50% more candidates than ever before for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, where more than 200 Member Federations compete, demonstrates the current value of athletics, and the great attraction of the Worlds as a major sporting event."
