7 March 2002GenevaFranzisca Rochat-Moser, the 1997 New York marathon winner, has been seriously injured in an avalanche while skiing in her native Switzerland.

“She is in the intensive care unit in a serious and stable state,” a hospital spokeswoman in Lausanne said on Thursday, a day after the 36-year-old was swept more than 500 metres and buried by snow while ski-trekking in the Alps.

Two companions, using a special detection device, found her unconscious and alerted rescue workers near the resort of Les Diablerets in south-western Switzerland.

Rochat-Moser, who is married to renowned chef Philippe Rochat retired from marathon running last September.
