19 February 2001 - The coaches of Russian national indoor team are looking to win a minimum of ten medals at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon (9-11 March) and say that their team is stronger than it was last year prior to the European indoors in Gent.

"My 7.00m jump is only the beginning, it just creates the base for more powerful summer jumps", said Liudmila Galkina after her victory at the Russian championships. "I am completely recovered from an awful injury last year and I done enough power training and changed my jumping technique. There are some new elements that I want to keep secret. I know that my winter potential gives me possibility to jump over 7.00m." 2000 Golden League winner Tatiana Kotova was second with 6.80m.

Yuriy Borzakovskiy was a bit nervous before the final of the national championships because he has already forgotten how to compete with his home runners.

"Now I know more or less what to expect from the best athletes at the international meetings, I know their running style and tactics, but I can only guess at what Russian runners are going to do on the track," said Yuriy before the competition.

But Borzakovskiy easily won his event and says that he will be in Lisbon on top form and that he is an even better runner then one year ago. His aim is to reach 1.42.

"In Karlsruhe, when I ran with my personal best 1:44.15, I did not do anything special. I was astonished when I saw the result, because the running was so easy and I was not tired," says Borzakovskiy.

"Last year I made some serious mistakes. Now I will not be pressurised into running the 4x400m. I also now understand that there is no sense in being afraid of the more famous athletes and I must train hard at home. In Sydney I was very tired after semi-final and could not find enough power for the final while Shumann was very lucky to win the Olympic title. My performances last year were also affected by a problems in my private life, but hopefully now that is all behind me.

In the pole vault Svetlana Feofanova won the national championships with 4.50m and stopped competing. She says that she did not do anything special to jump 4.64m in Dortmund as she is ready for such jumps and wants to beat Dragila in Lisbon.

Tatiana Lebedeva performed an outstanding 15.00m in the triple jump. And this without any intensive training for the indoor season, as she had not expected to go to Lisbon.

"I had lost any desire to jump and could not find the right emotions for the competition. My coach told me, ‘just jump and don’t think about anything’, so I jumped and got a marvellous feeling of flight", says Tatiana, and she now has the potential to win a medal in Lisbon.
