20 February 2002 - Athens, Greece – Pole vaulter Svetlana Feofanova led a show of force by Russian women at the indoor track meet here on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old has set new world indoor marks three times this month and cleared 4.60 metres to win at the IAAF’s Athina 2002 track and field meet - well short of her record at 4.73 metres.

She beat fellow-Russian Elena Belyakova and Yvonne Buschbaum of Germany, who both vaulted 4.50 metres.  Reigning world and Olympic champion, America’s Stacy Dragila, who finished fourth, said she hoped to regain her form to challenge Feofanova.

“This hasn’t been the greatest indoor for me,” said Dragila, who also cleared 4.50 metres Wednesday. “But if I can pull things together ... I’ll go for the world record.”

Dragila, 30, holds the outdoor record at 4.81 metres.

In other events, Russian women also dominated in the triple jump, and the 400 and 1500 metres.  The men’s competition was more varied with a Swede winning the sprint. Patrik Lovgren had the edge over Americans Coby Miller and Brian Lewis in the 60 metres, but all three clocked 6.62 seconds.

Staffan Strand, also from Sweden, cleared 2.32 metres to win the high jump.
