11 April 2000 - After the pole vault area record of 4.42m set by Argentinean Alejandra García (Sydney 20 February), it is the turn of javelin thrower Sueli Pereira dos Santos of Brazil to set a new South American Area Record this year. On Sunday she threw 60.47m during the Memorial Darwin Piñeyrúa in Montevideo, becoming the first South American athlete to go over 60m with the new javelin, introduced on 1 April 1999.

Dos Santos therefore regains the Area Record that was hers prior to the introduction of the new implement. The Brazilian’s previous South American Record (old implement) was 65.96m, a mark she set at Mar del Plata on 28 October 1994.
