Silva and Gomes the best at Portuguese National Clubs Champs

The Sporting Club of Portugal, third in the European Champion Clubs Cup won the both national titles, women and men, this weekend in Leiria, Portugal, in one of the most impressive stadiums built for the 2004 European Football Championship. The Lisbon team win the men title against Benfica and the women title against JOMA.

Individually, Rui Silva, the 2005 World and 2004 Olympic bronze medallist in 1500m, won the 3000m (8:00,18), less then 24 hours after taking a win in Zaragoza, in Spain.

In Leiria, Nelson Évora, the 2003 European Junior Long and Triple Jump champion, took both events wins with a 7.77m (wind: -0,3) in the Long Jump and a 16.40 (-0,4 m/s) Triple Jump.

Marco Fortes, bronze medallist in 2001 European Junior championship, who made 18.74m in the Shot Put; Abel Mutai, the silver medallist at the World Youth Championship in 2000m Steeplechase, won the 3000m Steeplechase in 8:35.38 and the 5000m in 14:07.80; Vitor Costa won the Hammer throw with 70.22 metres.

In the women’s events, the European Indoor Long Jump champion in 2005, Naide Gomes, won with 6.43m (w: -0,3), and the 100m Hurdles in 13.63 seconds (w: +0,6).

Teresa Machado, finalist (6th) in the 1997 World Championships in Athens returned from 10 months away from competition with a win in the Discus Throw with 55.56m, Vânia Silva, Portuguese Hammer record holder, threw 63.83m, and Clarisse Cruz won the 3000m Steeplechase with 10:16.37 minutes.
