8 November 2012 - Bydgoszcz, Poland - A two-day site visit to Bydgoszcz, host city of the upcoming IAAF World Cross Country Championships, concluded on Wednesday.

IAAF Council Member Anna Riccardi, IAAF Competitions Department Senior Manager Carlo de Angeli and IAAF Coordinator La Tanya Waweru inspected the official team hotels and proposed event venues and discussed several key organizational aspects of the 40th edition of the Championships which will be held on Sunday, 24 March 2013 in this northwestern Polish city.

"We are happy to be back in Bydgoszcz, the city of sports where we have organised successfully almost all of important events in our calendar," Riccardi said, speaking at a well-attended press conference on Wednesday. "We bring the World Cross Country Championships to a new formula of holding it every two years instead of each year. That is the reason of importance of the Bydgoszcz event.

"We hope the time break between the events will give a kind of a new spirit to this competition, will be a key to make the athletics world more focused on it and make the level of competition even higher as the athletes will have more time for the preparations."

The 2013 edition of the Championships will be an historic occasion for his city of 400,000 as it becomes the only city to host the event for the second time. This city, located 270 kilometres west of Warsaw, hosted the world’s finest middle and long distance runners in 2010.

"Of course we appreciate the role of the City Hall in the preparations as well, as we remember the experiences of (LOC General Director) Krzysztof Wolsztynski and his team gives as a very big chance for even more successful Championships than it was in 2010."

Wolsztynski said: "As the organisers of three important IAAF Championships in the past we strongly hope we will again fulfill the IAAF's trust and expectations.

"Of course once again it makes us happy and proud to invite the athletics family to our city to take a part in the fortieth World Cross Country Championships on the new course in Myslecinek Park."

The Road to Bydgoszcz 2013 begins this Sunday (11) with the Cross Internacional de Atapuerca, the kick-off event of the 2012/13 IAAF Cross Country Permit season.
