The 36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Edinburgh 2008 won the Event of the Year Award at the Sunday Mail/sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards 2008 held in Glasgow, Scotland on Thursday 4 December.

The IAAF World Athletics Series event, which saw more than 17,000 athletics fans flock to Edinburgh's Holyrood Park in March, was one of the biggest global sporting events ever to be staged in Scotland.

On 30 March 2008, in cold, occasionally rainy and blustery conditions in Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park, Ethiopia had a spectacular triumph, and dominated the championships. Led home by senior winners Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba, the country celebrated its first ever sweep of the four indivdual race titles in the slippery muddy conditions of the heavily rain and wind swept grass circuit.

On receiving the award on behalf of the championships, LOC Chair and scottishathletics Chief Executive Geoff Wightman said: "It was a great way to round off the year for the Edinburgh 2008 LOC, some of whom hadn't seen each other since March. As well as a table of the Scottish-based team members at the awards, we were delighted to see Cherry Alexander travel up from Birmingham and Paul Hardy, the IAAF Competitions Director, make a special journey from Monaco as a show of support for athletics.”

“Our championship sponsors Bank of Scotland and Highland Spring were also in attendance. I am proud of the way that they and all 600 volunteers delivered the Event of the Year," concluded Wightman.

Other winners on the night included from Andy Murray/ Tennis (Inspirational Performance of the Year), Chris Hoy/Cycling (Sport of the Year), Chris Hoy (Sports Personality of the Year) and Sir Alex Ferguson/Football (Lifetime Achievement Award).
