Surgery for McKenley

One of Jamaica's most revered athletes, multiple Olympic medallist and former World record breaker Herb McKenley, reportedly underwent surgery at the Tony Thwaites wing of the University Hospital of the West Indies on Monday night (10 May).

According to the Jamaica Observer newspaper, McKenley suffered a broken hip during a fall at his home in Kingston.

McKenley, who will turn 82 on 10 July this year, also built an enviable reputation as a track and field coach over four decades.

McKenley, a three time individual Olympic silver medallist was a member of the Jamaican team who won the gold medal in the 4x400 metres relay at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, in a World record.
