The 1st IAAF World Youth Championships

1st IAAF World Youth Championships
Bydgoszcz, Poland
16-18 July 1999

The IAAF Council, presided over by President Dr Primo Nebiolo, met in Marrakech on 18/19 March 1998 at the time of the World Cross Country Championships. On the first day of the meeting, the Council took a major decision: the inaugural edition of the World Youth Championships, introduced by decision of the 1997 IAAF Congress in Athens will take place in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The Championships are open uniquely to athletes under 18 years of age and intend to reinforce the IAAF’s policy of offering the youngest athletes the possibility of competing at the highest levels.

The city of Bydgoszcz had already hosted the 1979 European Junior Championships. Because of the youth of the contestants, the men’s events will feature a 2000m steeplechase instead of the standard 3000m.The height of the hurdles will be reduced in all events.

The competition is open to athletes of the ages of 15, 16 or 17 years by 31 December 1999 (i.e.born in 1982, 1983 or 1984)
