The 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Helsinki Finland (6 -14 August) which open this Saturday, returning to the heartland of our sport, have received a timely boost with a dramatic boost in ticket sales.

Local Organising Committee CEO Antti Pihlakoski confirmed to the IAAF Council Meeting this morning in Helsinki in his final progress report that “over the last 10 days, there has been a surge in demand for tickets for the World Championships.”

“As at 31 July 2005: 75% to 90% of all morning sessions (based on 40,000 full capacity) and 82% to 100% of all evening sessions have been sold.”

Pihlakoski also commented that he is still extremely confident that the remaining seats will be sold as the final Media promotion of the event begins to kick in. "We want to organise a World Championships with a unique, warm and entertaining spirit - making Helsinki a cherished memory."

Anticipating the traditional Finnish athletics crowd’s roar, now is perhaps the moment to buy your ear plugs! At the 1994 European Championships the noise erupting from Helsinki’s Olympic stadium on the night of the men’s Javelin Final broke the official city noise level safety limits for the wearing of ear protectors!
