Two members of the IAAF Athletes’ Commission, Morocco’s double Olympic gold medallist Hicham El Guerrouj, the four-time World 1500m champion, and Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, the Olympic and two-time World 10,000m champion, are among a group of leading athletes attending the 6th World Conference on Sport and Environment which is being held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 9 to 11 November 2005.

The conference, which is jointly organised by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will focus on the linkages between sport, peace, and environment. It will be attended by 300 heads of National Olympic Committees, international sport organizations, UN agencies as well as sport stars and will review the environmental activities of the Olympic Movement and other sport stakeholders.

Over the course of the three days, the participants will take part in panel discussions on key themes relating to sports, peace, environment, and sustainable development.

Also attending the conference are Ethiopia’s former World 10,000m champion, Berhane Adere, who was the silver medallist at the distance in Helsinki, and retired sprinter Frank Fredericks of Namibia who among his many achievements was 1993 World 200m champion.
