Tsatoumas leaps world-leading 8.21m in Peania - Greek indoor champs WRAP

Peania, GreeceA world leading leap by long jumper Luis Tsatoumas and three other national records highlighted the Greek national indoor championships in Peania over the weekend (19-20).

Tsatoumas continued his impressive indoor season. After his successful presence in Stuttgart last week, he once again exceeded the eight-metre barrier. This time he landed at 8.21m, breaking his own national indoor record and climbing on the top of the 2011 world list. Georgios Tsakonas jumped 7.97m to finish second, while both punched their tickets to the European indoor championships to held in Paris next month.

Nikoletta Kyriakopoulou set the second national record on the first day of the championships when th 25-year-old pole vaulter cleared 4.55m.

Konstantinos Baniotis was the winner of the men’s high jump with 2.27m, defeating the 22-year-old Dimitrios Hondroukis in the tie-break process. The latter twice improved his career best and also won a ticket to the European championships.

More performances of note from the first day include the return of Georgia Kokloni to the track. Twice on the podium at the European indoors, the sprinter will have another chance in Paris after winning the 60m title in 7.28. Angelos Angelaki won he mens’ short dash title with 6.69.

The second day of the championships was highlighted by another national record courtesy of Konstantinos Filippidis, who cleared 5.72m to add one centimetre the record he set last week in the same hall.

Paraskevi Papahristou was the winner of a close women’s Triple Jump competition. She jumped 14.28m to take the win, leaving Athanassia Perra (14.20m) in second. Dimitrios Tsiamis was the winner of the men’s event with 17.06m.

Elsewhere, Anastasia Karakatsani, won the women’s 3000m in 9:32.32, setting a national indoor junior record. Konstantinos Nakopoulos won the 800m in 1.48.79.
