Australia’s Gold Coast Marathon has two new ambassadors to assist in the promotion of this year’s edition.

This year’s Gold Coast Marathon – Australia’s premier running event held since 1979 – has two new Ambassadors: Australian marathon runner, Michael Shelley, and national cricket legend, Adam Gilchrist. Both high profile ambassadors are confirmed to take the role of inspiring current and potential participants in getting involved with the event.

Shelley and Gilchrist will take the message of practicing physical activities forward and they will both actively participate in this year’s event alongside more than 25,000 participants who are expected for this year’s edition.

Silver medallist in last year’s Commonwealth Games marathon, Shelley has already competed 10 times in the Gold Coast Marathon – however, this would be his first time running the full distance marathon at this event. His already recognized figure in Australia will provide the event with an important advocate in encouraging new runners to take part in the Gold Coast event.

Alternatively, Gilchrist waits to see his conditions after the end of the Indian Premier League season before choosing in what distance he will run. In principle, he intends to run a shorter, family-friendly distance that would allow him to speak with participants along the way.

The 33rd Gold Coast Marathon is scheduled for July 2 and 3, 2011 and both Ambassadors will contribute to an even more successful edition as they will be partly responsible for increasing the event’s recognition nationwide and for attracting new participants to one of Australia’s most traditional runs.

As Australia reinforces its Ambassador programme, it displays its commitment towards the Spirit of the Athletics World Plan and the objectives therein, leading athletics to increase its appeal and become the world’s number one participatory sport.
