30 April 1999 - Edwardsville, Illinois - A scaled-down second U.S. Grand Prix athletics meeting will be held on May 22, former world champion hurdler Greg Foster said on Friday. The event will take place at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and will be conducted by USA Track & Field, the sport's national governing body, Foster said in a telephone interview from his office in nearby St. Louis.

The same site hosted a grand prix meeting last year that was a tribute to retiring world heptathlon world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Joyner-Kersee will not be involved in this year's event, which will be called the U.S. Open, said Foster, athlete
representative for Joyner-Kersee's Elite International Sports Marketing.

The meeting was almost cancelled until  USA Track & Field stepped in: "We thought about cancelling it because we weren't able to
come up with the sponsorship we wanted," Foster said. "But we didn't want to do that. Now USA Track & Field is handling everything."
Foster said the meeting would still be an IAAF Grand Prix I event.

The other U.S. Grand Prix meeting, the Prefontaine Classic, will be held in Eugene, Oregon, on May 30.
