Multi talented Gold Coast flyer Sally McLellan is favourite to win a medal of the same colour after storming to within six hundredths of the 100m hurdles championship record in her first round heat.

Running just over two hours after winning her heat of the 200m, the 16-year-old Australian world leader sliced 28 hundredths from her personal best to run 13.14 – just shy of the championship record and world best performance set by Lamalle Adrianna in the inaugural World Youth Championships in 1999.

The Queenslander, who as well as also competing in the 200m plans to run a leg in the medley relay, produced the kind of performance which suggests she could become one of the stars of the championships.

McLellan helped inspire the four girls behind her to personal bests with Jamaica’s Latoya Greaves claiming second in 13.44 and Nigeria’s Josephine Onyia of Nigeria third in 13.64.

Sixteen-year-old American Domenique Manning ran fluently to win heat one in an impressive 13.51 with Belgian Eline Berings finishing strongly in 13.63 for second to advance to tonight’s semi-finals.

Germay’s Nadine Jacobs won heat three in a more modest 13.84 with France’s Cindy Billaud qualifying third in 14.17 despite stumbling at the last hurdle.
In the final heat Italy’s Veronica Borsi edged out America’s Pavi’elle James by six hundredths to win in 13.43 with the benefit of a 3.1 m/s tailwind. But McLellan will be the girl to beat come tomorrow’s final.
