Women 1500m Semifinals
The two semifinals produced no big surprises. All the main favourites, Masterkova, Jacobs, Sacramento, Szekeli advanced to the final easily. In the first heat Malin Ewerlof (SWE) and Olga Nelyuoba (Rus) led the pack through the first 400m in 1:06.34, with Sacramento in third a few metres behind. At 800 (2:14.21) only the Russian led and at the bell (3:03.16)with the pace quickening the defending champion Portuguese Carla Sacramento took the lead tracked by the surprising Spanish Ana Amelia Menendez. It was already in the home straight when 34 year old Romanian Violeta Beclea-Szekely changed her pace to cross the finish line comfortably (4:05.00) while Menendez and Sacramento clocked both 4:05.21 for second and third respectively. Among the automatic qualifiers also were Marlan Ruyan (USA) and Anna Jakubczak (POL). The second semifinal was led in the early stages by Julia Sakara (ZIM), but at 200 Romanian Elena Buhaianu took over looking for a place in the final as one of the two fastest losers (such was the depth of the field: Weyermann, Masterkova, Jacobs...). At 400 this heat was 3.44 faster than the first with the Romanian still leading and the main group in close attendance. At 800 (2:09.88) her advantage increased he had some 4 seconds over the main field. At the bell (3:01.32) the main favourites catched Buhaianu and in the home straight Jacobs, Masterkova and Weyermann had no problemas to advance to the final (Jacobs won with 4:04.75) while the Romanian also was among the automatic qualifiers. The two fastest losers came from this heat, Jackline Maranga (KEN) and Lidia Chojecka (POL).
1500 Mujeres Semifinales
Ninguna de las semifinales produjo sorpresas. Todas las favoritas, Masterkova, Jacobs, Sacramento y Szekely pasaron facilmente a la final. En la primera semifinal Malin Ewerlof (SUE) y Olga Nelyuoba (RUS) comandaron el grupo en los primeros 400 metros 1:06.34 con Sacramento tercera pocos metros despues. En los 800 (2:14.21) ya solo estaba en cabeza la rusa y al toque de campana (3:03.16) con el ritmo incrementandose, la actual campeona la portuguesa Carla Sacramento cogio el mando seguida por la sorprendente espanola Ana Amelia Menendez. Fue en la recta final ya cuando la rumana de 34 anos Violeta Szekely cambio de ritmo para entrar vencedora comodamente en 4:05.00 mientras Menendez y Sacramento marcaron 4:05.21 siendo segunda y tercera respectivamente. Entre las que se clasificaron por puestos tambien estuvieron Marlan Ruyan (USA) y Anna Jakubczak (POL). La segunda semifinal fue liderada en los primeros compases por Julia Sakara (ZIM) pero al paso del 300 la rumana Elena Buhaianu cambio en busca de uno de los dos puestos de repesca (tal era el nivel de las participantes: Masterkova, Weyermann, Jacobs...). A los 400 metros esta serie iba 3.44 segundos mas rapida que la primera, con la rumana aun en cabeza y el grupo muy cerca. Por los 800 (2:09.89) su ventaja se incremento hasta los 4 segundos sobre el resto. En la campana (3:01.32) las favoritas cogieron a Buhaianu y en la recta final ni Jacobs, Masterkova ni Weyermann tuvieron problemas para pasar a la final. La rumana tambien estuvo entre las clasificadas por puestos. Las dos repescadas fueron de esta semifinal: Jackline Maranga (KEN) y Lidia Chojecka (POL).
