Women 3000 metre heats

Ethiopian runners controlled the two heats, with double World Junior champion Meseret Defar (8:49.80), the winner of the second section, enjoying a rare superiority claim over Berhane Adere (8:53.64), who was the victor in the opening heat.

Others of note who advanced to Sunday’s final were European 5K champion Marta Domínguez of Spain (8:51.97), two-time World outdoor medallist Zahra Ouaziz of Morocco (8:57.21), Commonwealth 1500 silver medallist Hayley Tullett of Great Britain (9:00.13), and Commonwealth 5K finalist Benita Johnson of Australia (8:57.08), plus cross-country standout Zhor El Kamch of Morocco (8:52.31).
