Women’s 400m hurdles

With the world junior record holder for the discipline under starter’s orders in tonight’s final the crowd and athletes themselves admittedly expected the first World junior record of the Championships to fall. And it did.

Running in lane 5 South Carolina’s Lashinda Demus clocked a fabulous 54.70 and took 15 hundredths of a second off her personal best and world junior record.

The fastest out of the blocks, it was her race to win. She committed no mistakes and powered to the line, which she crossed with a 1.3 second clearance.

Behind her two Jamaicans Melanie Walker and Camille Robinson running respectively in lanes 6 and 4 had strong races and finished second and third.

Robinson improved her personal best and deprived team USA of the second medal in the event. Tiffany Ross could only manage to clock 56.52 and was clearly disappointed with her performance. Both Americans and Jamaicans should step back on the track again for the 4x400m relays which promises to be thrilling.
