Women 60m Hurdles Final

With most eyes on the Olympic champion and favourite Olga Shishigina, it was Anjanette Kirkland, the 26 year-old US champion, running in the outside lane, who stole past her rivals to win gold in 7.85, a personal best. Kirkland broke brilliantly from the blocks (her reaction time of 0.110 was near perfect), but Michelle Freeman (JAM), running in lane 5, alongside Shishigina, also started well and held a slight edge at the third hurdle, only for Kirkland to ease ahead in the last third of the race. Shishigina was never a factor, and was even deprived of a place on the podium by Nicole Ramalalanirina (FRA), who was given the same time 7.96. Although Kirkland's victory was clear-cut just 7/100ths separated second from fifth place.
