Women’s 60m hurdles

The race looked to have been won by last year’s emergent star Glory Alozie when Olga Shishigina edged past just before the finish to win by 1 hundredth of a second. Alozie had a good start – although Canada’s Keturah Anderson was the fastest away – and the Asian record holder was lagging behind for the first 30 metres. Shishgana didn’t panic, and with slick technique began closing the gap before dipping across the line in 7.86. Anderson was rewarded with the bronze and a new national record of 7.90 – two hundredths clear of one of the pre-race favourites Brigita Bukovec.

Gold Medallist - SHISHIGINA Olga (KZK)
"Even at this relatively late stage in my career I can now see that improvement is possible for me as an athlete.
My result in this championship has released so much pressure from me. Throughout my career I have been like a little bird in a shadow of the great tree. I have now flown free into the light and my emotions are very strong at this moment. I have waited for this victory and now I have fufilled at least some of my potential.
This summer sees Seville and the outdoor Worlds and I am pleased to know that I am even better over a 100m hurdles!"

Silver Medallist - ALOZIE Glory (NGR)
"I almost run out of speed at the end. I have a bad finish, that is for sure. I have to concentrate on this aspect in the future. The track was not the best possible. It was too hard. I am very happy and satisfied with the silver. But I still know I have to train hard and keep on competing to even maintain this level."

Bronze Medallist - ANDERSON Keturah (CAN)
"I seem to be very consistent with my performance, running 7.90 every time. I had a great start, but after the first hurdle I fell back. That is something I want to work on. I also want to work on my technique a little as well as my speed, which I haven't got back yet since my injury last year. I wanted a medal, and I got that. That was my aim for the year. I will start my outdoor season a little later this year, so that I don't get tired by the time of Seville."
