There were no major surprises, as the top runners all advanced to the semifinals on Saturday morning.

Stephanie Graf of Austria, last winter’s European indoor silver medallist, had the fastest heat time with 2:01.93, just ahead of the clocking of the woman who beat her in Vienna last year, Slovenia’s Jolanda Ceplak (2:02.12), the World Record holder.

Defending champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique had everything under control in her heat win (2:03.33), but it was nonetheless a tight finish ahead of Diane Cummins of Canada (2:03.62) and the other Slovenian entry, Brigita Langerholc (2:03.79).

The European outdoor silver medallist, Mayte Martínez of Spain (2:05.16) was the remaining heat winner, just holding off Britain’s Jo Fenn (2:05.45).

Other notables advancing to the next round include Asian indoor record holder Miho Sugimori of Japan (2:03.55) and Russian champion Yekaterina Puzanova (2:02.65).
