Carolina Kluft threw a personal best of 46.83 metres with her first attempt to garner 799 points from this, the penultimate event of the women’s heptathlon.
The young Swede now has a six-event total of 5557 points and will need 909 points from the final event, the 800 metres, if she is to better Thiele’s 1983 record of 6465 points.
With Olga Alekseyeva currently at 4920 points, Kluft is assured of a massive victory regardless of whether or not she makes the record mark.
The best performer in this event was the Netherlands’ Tine Veenstra, with 48.83 metres (837), followed by Lilly Schwarzkopf (GER), with 47.53 metres and 812 points.
