Women’s javelin throw Final

Australia’s Kimberly Mickle improved her personal best by more than 2 metres to win the IAAF/Westel World Youth Championships title.

Mickle threw an impressive 51.83 at her fifth effort to defeat South Africa’s Justine Robbeson who also set a new personal best at 51.54.

With a massive first attempt of 51.21 Mickle set the tone of a final that would see three women beyond the 51-metre mark.

The most consistent of the competitors – her six attempts were all beyond the 45-metre mark, Mickle was only threatened by Robison’s last effort which went very close to her best mark. Ensured of the title, Mickle produced a consistent last effort of 51.30.

“I am very surprised to win the competition. Many other competitors in this final had better marks than me. It is hard to believe that I am the World champion.”

Czech Republic’s Andrea Kvetova who was favourite for the title before the final finished third with a best performance of 51.49 well below her personal best of 54.31.
