Women Long Jump final

It took a personal best 6.46m (equalled) for Adina Anton to grab the first gold medal of the Championships for Romania. China’s Lina Wang took silver with a 6.36-metre first attempt while bronze went to Nigeria’s Asther Aghatise who jumped 6.34.

After the first round, Wang took the lead trailed by Aghatise’s effort of 6.19m. At this stage Anton was fourth (5.95) behind Australia’s World Youth Champion Shermin Oksuz who had leapt 6.06m.

Anton successfully realized three long jumps. A 6.33m second attempt strengthened her second place. At her third attempt she took the lead with 6.37m which she backed up with a 6.46m jump at her fourth attempt.

This was enough for the Romania who decided not to take her last attempt.

Aghatise had two good jumps at her third and fourth attempts which could have assured her of silver but she landed 3 and then 2 centimetres short of Wang’s opening 6.36. She had to be content with bronze.

Oksuz looked like she could claim a medal when she landed in the pit for her fifth attempt. The score board showed a mark of 6.24, her best of the evening but not good enough for a medal.

The world leader and Asian Champion, Xiaohui Bi had two fouls at her first two attempts and could only manage a poor 5.87 which wasn’t good enough to be amongst the top 8 who would take an extra three attempts. She eventually finished 11th.
