Women long jump final

Gold MedallistNiurka MONTALVO (ESP)
"Normally I'm good with my last attempt in competition and tonight proved this fact. My last attempt was clearly valid. The take off board shows no mark to indicate a foul, so I believe it was good. I felt the whole event was very tough this evening. May (ITA) has shown she is in wonderful shape. I was concerned that she might have produced a big jump with her final attempt and so I was very anxious before her jump."
Silver Medallist - Fiona MAY (ITA)
"That's how life goes. I came second, it could have been better, it could have been worse. I thought Marion (Jones) might be tougher. I cannot say I'm happy and I don't want to be unsporting but everybody saw what happened in Montalvo's last jump. I am showing good sportmanship and settle for this. It is not my job to make a protest, it is my team which does this. I wasn't technically perfect in the competition though I was lucky to get six clean jumps. I cannot really think of it now. Give me half an hour to calm down."
Bronze Medallist - Marion JONES (USA)
"Of course I am a little bit disappointed, I came here to win. This time it didn't go my way but that means I just have to try next year again. I am not concentrating on long jump, though. I am doing things in the future exactly the same way I have been doing so far. I congratulate Montalvo. The huge last jump showed her character. She earned her victory."
