The World Indoor Championships victory stand was familiar territory for all the women's shot medalists. Winner Irina Korzhanenko (Russia) was the '97 bronze medalist, runner-up Nadezhda Ostapchuk (Belarus) was the '01 runner-up and Astrid Kumbernuss (Germany) earned the '97 bronze.
They had to fight it out with similar high-class company, as the 4th and 5th placers were also former residents of the WIC podium.
Korzhanenko never trailed, reaching 20.14 in the first round and improving that to a meet record 20.55 in the second. It was also just a centimeter off the yearly lead held by Ostapchuk, whose best for the day was a 20.31 later in the second round. Kumbernuss was briefly in silver position with her 19.86 in the second round and that stayed as her best.
