Women Shot Put Qualification

The competition's technical advisers were spoton with their use of 18.50 as an automatic qualifying mark, as seven of the eight finalists surpassed that level.

A nation rich in this event, Russia elected to send only a single entrant, but their two-time world indoor champion Svetlana Krivelyova led the way in the qualifying with a 19.46 on her only trip into the ring.

Cuba advanced both of its powerful women--Yumileidi Cumba (19.13) and Misleydis Gonzalez (PB 18.56), while Ukraine's Vita Pavlysh--the year's top shotputter--had an easy time with an 18.88.

Last year's Asian champion, Li Meiju of China advanced with an indoor PB 18.76, as did two-time world outdoor silver medallist Nadine Kleinert of Germany (18.62).

The final two spots were claimed by former world indoor silver medallists Nadezhda Ostapchuk of Belarus (18.60) and Poland's Krystyna Zabawska (18.42), the latter barely avoiding an ignominious exit after foul throws on her first two attempts.

Notable non-qualifiers were the fourth- and fifth-place shotputters on this year's world list, Cleopatra Borel (18.19), the new sensation from Trinidad, and the second Belarus entrant, Natalia Khoroneko (18.34).

The finalists won't get much of a rest, with the medal round scheduled for later this afternoon.
