Women's 100 Metres

What a season for ShellyAnn Fraser. Unheralded and unknown before the start of the campaign she has improved her 100m best by a staggering 0.53 this season, landed a unexpected Olympic gold medal and ends the season $30,000 richer with victory in the IAAF World Athletics Final.

Fraser blasted out of the blocks into an early lead and it was an advantage she was never likely to relinquish, recording a hugely impressive 10.94 in the chilly conditions inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Behind her, Fraser's fellow Jamaican Kerron Stewart finished second in 11.06 in a photo-finish from American's Marshevet Hooker who recorded the same time.

If Fraser did not enjoy the unseasonably cold weather she showed little visible sign. It was a complete sprinting performance on the green track which is set to be ripped up after this event.

Benefiting from a reliably quick start Fraser held a clear metre advantage by one-tenths distance and simply ran away from the opposition to rack up another success.

Stewart, who shared the Olympic silver medal with her countrywoman Sherone Simpson at the Beijing Olympic Games, again finished second with Hooker, the Olympic 200m finalist in third.

A measure of how unaccommodating the conditions were for the eight finalists is that only the first three dipped below 11.20 - with the USA's Carmelia Jeter fourth in 11.21.
