The USA's Inger Miller won clearly with 21.77, a world season's best. Thus Miller obtains her second medal at this Championships after her silver in the 100 metres. The other medals were obtained by two of the three Jamaicans in the final, with an unusual second bronze also being awarded: Beverly McDonald took the silver with 22.22, a new personal best, and Merlene Frazer and Andrea Philipp of Germany were both awarded bronze medals after the jury of appeal had reviewed the photo-finish images and determining that both athletes had crossed the line at exactly the same time of 22.26. Both of the Jamaican athletes had already won world medals in relay events but these are their first in single races.

La norteamerica Inger Miller vencio con autoridad gracias a sus 21.77, mejor marca mundial de la temporada. Miller obtiene asi su segunda medalla en los campeonatos tras su plata en los 100 m.l. El podium lo campletaron dos de las tres jamaicanas participantes en la final: la plata fue para Beverly McDonald con 22.22 superando su tope personal y el bronce para Merlene Frazer y la alemana Andrea Philipp con el mismo tiempo 22.26. Ambas ya habian conseguido medallas en mundiales en las pruebas de relevos, pero nunca en individuales.
