With a sizzling 49.6 closing leg, Jamaican Novlene Williams anchored the Americas team to a thrilling victory over Team USA in the 4x400 Relay.

The quartet clocked a world-leading 3:19.84 to defeat the American team’s 3:20.69 to successfully defend their World Cup title.

DeeDee Trotter took a narrow lead for the American squad, but it was 2004 Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling that wrestled it away from Monique Henderson, and the Bahamian did it for good. Christine Amertil maintained the lead for the Americas before handing the baton to Williams, who found the strength to fend off the 49.4 closing leg by Lashinda Demus

I’m very happy to be back in Athens,” said Williams-Darling. “We were the best and it showed.”

Russia, second after Svetlana Pospelova’s opening leg, dropped back on the second and never found themselves in contention, and finished third in 3:21.21, well ahead of Europe’s 3:22.35.
