Women's 4x400m

The United States took the women’s 4x400m relay for the fourth time in succession. Their time of 3:30.19 put them four seconds in front of Ukraine, with Australia third.

Lanie Whittaker handed on to Jessica Beard, who was also part of the squad two years ago in Beijing and who won silver in the individual 400m. When third-leg runner Erica Alexander handed on to Takecia Jameson, the result was all but decided.

As easy as the victory was, they were well outside the world record set by the American team at the 2004 World Juniors of 3:27.60, which had been their target.

Australia’s Olivia Tauro, having taken over in fifth place on the third leg, had made an audacious attempt to catch the Americans. But she was treading water in the home straight and was caught by two other runners.

Eventually World Youth champion Yuliya Baraley anchored the Ukrainians to silver holding off fast finishing Angeline Blackburn.
