Double Commonwealth gold medallist and 1997 World champion Beatrice Faumuina of New Zealand, the representative of Oceania produced a series of three 61m plus throws which dominated her opponents in the Women’s Discus.

Topped by a third round 62.47m winning release, Faumuina also had throws of 61.17 and 61.24 with attempts one and four respectively.

There were only two other throwers over 60 metres with Greece’s European champion Katerina Voggoli (Europe) in second with a smooth first round 61.77m which held first place until the third round. However, the Greek only registered one other mark, a miss-timed 52.35m, in that same round.

Reigning World champion, Russian Natalya Sadova finished back in third with 61.30, a performance which she dragged out in the final round after a disappointing sub 60 metre competition until that point.
