19 October 2000 - Seema Antil gave India its first world junior medal of any colour when she won the women's discus with 55.27.

Antil lead after three rounds with 53.26 and consolidated her pole position with fifth round heave of 54.14.

However her lead was snatched from under her nose when China's moved up from fourth place with a final round heave of 54.41 but then Antil responded in the best possible fashion with the final throw of the contest.

Germany's Jana Tucholke got the bronze medal with her fifth round effort of 53.97.

Antil, and all the other medallists, were delighted with their places on the podium but one woman who will leave Santiago disappointed is Croatia's Vera Begic, who finished 6th with 52.28. In July, Begic threw 56.22 but on this occasion could not find her best form.
