The first event of day two of competition at the 9th IAAF World Cup in Madrid saw an unexpected winner in China’s Yuan Gu. Gu’s was the first win for the Asian team in Madrid and only the seventh victory by an Asian athlete at the World Cup since the competition was created in 1977.

Two time Asian champion and record holder, Gu was the only athlete today to reach the 70-metre mark, a last attempt which was measured at 70.75m.

World Champion Yipsi Moreno (CUB), competing for the Americas took the lead with her second throw at 69.65m. The Caribbean seemed not at her best today and had no other legal attempt.

In third European champion Olga Kuzenkova competing for Russia registered 66.98m, her poorest performance of the season. She nevertheless grabbed 7 points which put her team ahead of Europe by just one point.

Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska, competing for Europe, could throw no better than 65.24m for fifth position.
