Women's High Jump qualifying round

The automatic qualifying standard of 1.94 turned out to be a rather accurate prognosticator of the talent level, as thirteen of the 38 competitors successfully cleared the height.

Among those advancing to the final were this season's world leader and current European champion Monica Dinescu of Romania, reigning European indoor champion Kajsa Bergqvist of Sweden, Atlanta bronze medalist Inga Babakova of the Ukraine, world indoor silver medalist Zuzana Hlavonova of the Czech Republic, and current Commonwealth and African champion Hestrie Cloete of South Africa.

The competition began while an early morning shower was hovering over Sydney. But by the time the bar had reached 1.94, blue skies and sun had returned.

Notable among those falling out of the competition was current world indoor champion Hristina Kalcheva of Bulgaria, who failed at her opening height of 1.80.
