Cuba’s World champion and World record holder Osleidys Menendez (Americas) having had a largely inconsistent season by her formerly prodigious standards, killed the competition with her opening round throw of 64.41 metres. Her's also turned out to be a consisitent series with second and third attempts of 62.91 and 62.49, respectively.

Russia’s Tatyana Shikolenko who had beaten Menendez three times during the summer’s IAAF Golden League also produced her best in the first round with 60.11 but didn’t register another mark in the competition.

In third, the same position she took in the 1998 World Cup, was Finland’s Mikaela Ingberg competing for Europe, who produced her 60.08 effort in the fourth and last round.

None of the other six competitors could get within two metres of the 60m line.
