MonteCarloWith the last IAAF World Outdoor meeting before next weekend's inaugural World Athletics Final taking place yesterday evening in Rieti, the IAAF World Rankings were immediately calculated to decide the automatic qualifiers for the two days of competition in Monaco – Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September.

The Athletes ranked in the top 7 positions (11 positions for races of 1500m and over) of the World Rankings in each of the 33 events qualify for the World Athletics Final and have been invited to compete in the Principality’s prestigious Stade Louis II.

The IAAF has the right to invite a maximum of 1 wild-card Athlete per event in a maximum of 5 events. For those events where no wild card Athlete is invited, the 8th Athlete (the 12th for races of 1500m and over) in the IAAF World Rankings will be invited.

Athletes of the Year

The Athletes of the Year will also be decided by the Overall Standings in the IAAF World Rankings after competition is completed at the World Athletics Final on Sunday 14 September, with the awards being made at the International Athletics Foundation Gala that same evening.

At present Hicham El Guerrouj leads the men’s standing (1461 pts) and there is a very close battle at the top of the Overall women’s standing with World Heptathlon champion Carolina Klüft of Sweden (1436pts) just ahead of South Africa’s double World High Jump gold medallist, Hestrie Cloete (1434 pts).
