World-leading 1:59.09 for Kofanova in Kazan

Kazan, RussiaA worldleading 1:59.09 by Yelena Kofanova was the highlight of the Russian Under 23 Championships (16-18) which concluded in Kazan on Thursday.

For Kofanova, 20, it was another marked improvement on her personal best, a 2:00.21 mark set at the Kuts Memorialin Moscow on 6 June.

An aggressive runner, her slogan is speed, speed and more speed. It's interesting to note that Kofanova, who is from Moscow was born 08-08-88. her two main opponents also produced good results: runner-up Aleksandra Uvarova in 2:01.61 and Julia Tugaeva who was third in 2:01.77.

Ivan Tukhtachev was the fastest in the men’s 800m, winning in 1:48.55 although he appeared to have plenty in reserve. Ruslan Baiyzitov was the runner-up in 1:48.88. Tukhtachev then tried his luck in the 1500m but finished second in 3:40.48 behind Dmitriy Gavrilov’s 3:40.38.

The men's 400m was dominated by Aleksei Aksenov who set the best result of the Russian season at 46.27. Dmitriy Buryak was second in 46.73.

Two women whose first name is Kseniya were the fastest in the women's 400m, won by Kseniya Ustalova in 51.45 followed by Kseniya Zadorina (51.90).

Another Russia's season best was registered in the men's Long Jump. Pavel Karavaev leaped a wind-assisted 7.99m topping his main opponent, Sergei Slepukhin, by just 2 cm.

Mikhail Idrisov was second to none in the men's 100m clocking 10.58. Marina Panteleeva won the women’s contest in 11.66. Yekaterina Efimova won Women's 200m in 23.00 leaving behind the Olympic champion in the 4x100m Relay Aleksandra Fedoriva (23.16).

Konstantin Shabanov, the World junior champion, set a personal best of 13.77 in the 110m Hurdles. The women’s World junior champion, Yekaterina Shtepa, was also victorious, clocking 13.22. Vyacheslav Sakaev won Men's 400m Hurdles (50.19).

Yevgeniy Shishanov and Sergei Milokumov shared the honours in the men's High Jump, clearing 2.21m. Yevgeniy Ageev and Anastasiya Savchenko were the best in Pole Vault, with 5.50m and 4.20m clearances. Alsu Murtazina won women's Triple Jump (14.44). Valeriy Kokoev was the strongest in the men's Shot Put winning with a 19.75m effort to beat Aleksandr Bulanov (19.03m).
