World-leading 50.35 by Montsho in Abidjan

19 April 2010 - Amantle Montsho of Botswana clocked a world-leading 50.35 in the 400m at the Gabriel Tiacoh meet in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Saturday (16).

It was the third fastest performance ever for Montsho, the reigning African champion in the event who trains at the High Performance Training Centre in Dakar. The 26-year-old, who finished eighth at both the 2008 Olympic Games and 2009 World Championships, finished fourth last month at the World Indoor Championships in Doha.

Her HPTC training partners Ndeye Fatou Soumah of Senegal and Nawal El Jack of Sudan finished a distant second and third, clocking 52:28 and 54.04, respectively.

Montsho also doubled back to win the 200m where she clocked 23.16.

The highlight on the mens program was produced by Ndiss Kaba Badji of Senegal in the Long Jump. The 26-year-old leaped 8.04m, an season's best. Like Montsho, Badji was also a finalist in Beijing and Doha, finishing sixth at both.

La Botswanaise Amantle Montsho, a réussi la meilleure performance mondiale de l'année sur 400m - 50"35 -  à l’occasion du Meeting Gabriel Tiacoh d’Abidjan, en Côte d’Ivoire, le samedi 16 avril.

C’était la troisième meilleure performance de sa carrière pour Montsho, championne d’Afrique en titre de la discipline, qui s’entraîne au Centre d’entraînement de hautes performances de Dakar. L’athlète de 26 ans, huitième aux Jeux Olympiques de Pékin 2008 et aux Championnats du Monde 2009, a fini quatrième de la finale des Championnats du Monde en salle de Doha le mois dernier.

Ses partenaires d’entraînement du CEHP, la Sénégalaise Ndeye Fatou Soumah et la Soudanaise Nawal El Jack ont terminé respectivement seconde et troisième, à quelque distance de la première, avec des temps de 52"28 et de 54"04.

Montsho a également remporté le 200m, terminant première avec un temps de 23"16.

Le point d’orgue du programme masculin de la soirée a été le fait du Sénégalais Ndiss Kaba Badji, dans le saut en longueur. Agé de 26 ans, il a atterri à 8,04m, la meilleure performance de la saison. Tout comme Montsho, Badji a également atteint les finales de Pékin et Doha, terminant sixième dans les deux compétitions.
