Legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny was in good form this weekend and also took time to announce that he will be running for the position of Czech Olympic Committee President.

Zelezny competed on Sunday at Slovakian EAA Meeting in Dubnica and won with 79.55 in his only fourth competition of the year beating Vadim Vasilevskis of Latvia, the Olympic silver medallist.

"It was pity the runway was too short, it cost maybe 5 or 6 metres. I could not have my full run-up. That means I still feel good shape,“ he said.

He had a comfortable win over Vasilevskis by 2 metres, who was also in good shape as the day before the Latvian had thrown 83.56 in Banska Bystrica. In that meet, the second placed thrower was Tomas Intas from Lithuania who achieved a national record of 82.94m.

The Athletics bridge a format of two EAA Meetings in two days proved to be an interesting concept. Nine athletes won on both days and so were entitled to get a share of 1222 euro from the total 11,000 euro jackpot.

As to the national sport politics, Zelezny also began his bid to become NOC President. The elections are planned for 11 January 2005.

Three time Olympic champion and three time World champion sees his future in sports diplomacy. During the Olympic Games in Athens he was again elected as member of IOC Athletes Commission with the second highest score. That means he is now also IOC Member.

"It depends how the January votes will finish. After that I will decide about my javelin career. There are more possibilities. In case I will not succeed I think I could be still able to throw at some meetings. If yes, maybe the Ostrava Super Grand Prix Golden Spike on June 9 will be my farewell competition,“ explained Zelezny.

His reasons why he decided to try for high official position are clear.

"I have received a lot from sports and athletics, now it s time to give something back. I want to help the athletes and the whole sports movement in our country.“

Current president Milan Jirasek said for the moment that he will bid again too.
