The only junior to have run under 28 minutes so far in 2014 is Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, who ran 27:56.26 in the Dutch town of Leiden last month.

Cheptegei, 17, will try to emulate his countryman Boniface Kiprop and become the second Ugandan to win a gold medal at the Championships in the longest running event on the track.

The top two at the Kenyan trials, Elvis Cheboi and Nicholas Kosimbei, will  want to restore the Kenyan honour after the disappointment of seeing the gold go to Ethiopia two years ago in Barcelona.

Fifth in the 5000m two years ago, Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Mekonnen has shown he is capable of keeping the world junior title in Ethiopia following his impressive world junior best of 2:04:32 in his marathon debut in Dubai back in January and a lot of interest will be focussed on him as well.
