Will Claye starts as a strong favourite for the Americas team. The US athlete has jumped 17.75m this season and is the only man in the field to have ventured beyond 17.50m in 2014.

The world bronze medallist also has an Olympic silver medal in his specialist event as well as a bronze medal in the long jump, making him the first double medallist in the two disciplines since 1936.

Next best in terms of 2014 performances is Benjamin Compaore with 17.46m. The Frenchman caused an upset at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich last month when he became his country’s first ever European champion in the event.

Two weeks later in the same stadium, he came within one centimetre of that mark to finish second at the IAAF Diamond League final in Zurich, one place ahead of Claye.

Russia’s Lyukman Adams will be looking to recapture the form that brought him the world indoor title earlier this year.
