It’s no surprise that the Americas will field the women to beat.
Jamaica’s former world champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has pieced together a string of consistent performances through the summer. That, coupled with her ample experience, will ensure that she’ll be a strong threat. She hasn’t clocked sub-11 since Monaco on 18 July but she’ll arrive on the heels of an 11.04 victory in Zurich, her third of the season.
Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago, who clocked 10.85 at her national championships, was arguably the season’s hottest sprinter through mid-summer. The 22-year-old was undefeated in 10 races until a hamstring strain sidelined her at the Commonwealth Games. Marrakech will be her first start since.
Europe comes armed with the 1-2 from the continental championships, double dash winner Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands and Myriam Soumare of France. Although stronger over the half lap –they’ll both be doubling here – both have improved to 11.03 this season.
Oceania record-holder Melissa Breen (11.11) of Australia leads the Asia-Pacific squad and Marie Jose Ta Lou, the continental 100m bronze medallist and 200m runner-up, leads the African team.
